How many vehicles can I tune with EFILive?

EFILive Personal or Commercial versions can tune a limited number of supported vehicles. To tune more vehicles, extra PCM licenses may be purchased here .

EFILive Workshop allows unlimited vehicle tuning.

What is the main difference between Personal and Commercial?

The Commercial version has 3 extra features not available with the Personal version:

  1. PCM locking, to prevent any other tuning tool from reading, modifying or overwriting the PCM’s calibrations.
  2. Electronic Throttle Control calibrations.
  3. Full reflash capability, which is required if you want to install a custom operating system. Once installed, a custom operating system can be tuned using any version of the EFILive Tuning Tool.

What is the difference between Commercial and Workshop?

The Commercial version uses the same PCM based licensing scheme as the Personal version. The Workshop version allows unlimited tuning of the supported vehicles.

Can I use EFILive’s custom operating systems with EFILive Personal?

Yes, you can tune any EFILive custom operating system using EFILive’s Personal Tuning Tool. However, a Workshop or Commercial version is required in order to upgrade a PCM to a custom operating system. If your tuner upgrades your vehicle to an EFILive custom operating system using a Workshop version, then you will be able to tune the custom operating system with your Personal version (provided the tuner does not lock the PCM).

Can I permanently damage my PCM using EFILive?

Nothing is 100% safe.

The Personal version has been designed to minimize the risk to your PCM. We currently know of nothing in the Personal version that can cause permanent damage to your PCM.

The Commercial and Workshop versions have features (not available in the Personal version) that, if used incorrectly, can render your PCM inoperable. However, such occurrences are rare and usually only occur due to faulty equipment or an interrupted power supply.

How many times can I reflash my PCM?

Most PCMs are fitted with off the shelf flash memory chips. The flash memory manufacturers provide data sheets for each type of flash memory, which explain that the flash chips are good for about 10000 write cycles. We think it is unlikely that you would ever “wear out” the flash chip.

The PCM uses sophisticated algorithms to check the flash memory every time the engine is started. If a problem does occur with your flash memory the PCM will report a trouble code immediately.

Can I return my PCM to stock at any time?

Yes, provided that you saved a copy of your stock tune prior to reprogramming the PCM. Saving the stock tune is the first step you should perform prior to reflashing a PCM. The EFILive installation CD is the perfect place to store your Stock tunes.

Can I tune my PCM if another tuner has previously tuned it?

Yes, unless that tuner has locked your PCM. In that case, you must ask the original tuner to unlock your PCM. Usually that means the tuner will return it to stock.

Can I store comments in my tuning files?

Yes, use the Tuning Tool menu option View->Show calibration window, then select the [Comments] tab page.

EFILive also automatically stores a searchable, chronological history of changes that have been made.

Note, neither comments nor history are written into the PCM, they are only saved in the *.tun file on your PC.

Can I store comments in the PCM?
No.

I get a message saying one or more calibrations are out of range, what should I do?

EFILive has many built in safety features, one of which double-checks ALL calibrations to make sure they are within the correct operating range. If you read a PCM or load a *.tun file that contains values outside of what EFILive considers “normal”, you will be alerted and EFILive will coerce the value towards normal.
